A couple of weeks ago I passed my first year PhD ‘viva’/’oral examination’ thing. It was a lot of fun, and for anyone wondering what exactly it is that I do, here’s the document I submitted and was examined on.

Technically it’s both a first year report and a PhD proposal—that means it’s half problem statement, half work I did in my first year, and half plan for what I’m actually going to produce by the end of my PhD.

After my exam there’s plenty in here that will change but if you’re interested, give it a skim! There are a few things missing that I worked on and wrote up over my first year that haven’t become papers (yet), but I’ll be posting some of them as blog posts in the next couple of weeks.
